I had my computer serviced at a local dealer recently. We were discussing ram and she said that windows98 does not reconigze (cant spell http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif ) any more than 98megs. She said that your computer showes the amount of ram installed but does not use anymore than 98 in its programs. Is this a fact and is it worth putting my extra 256 on top of my current 128?

Well If Win98 doesn’t use anything over 98 meg then I’m in trouble.
I have 98 in my laptop. 256 in my desktop for surfing and 512 in my graphics work station.
And all 3 units USE every bit of it when needed
.
In Fact I have 119 meg in use at this moment http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif 5 full size programs running on graphics work station.

As I recall the stats for win98 say it can access and use 2 gig of memory

Now will it help you to install that extra 256.
That depends onwhat you use your system for.
Hi end/large graphics programs can and will use it.

Hi Slayer,
I would have to say that she is smokin something.
I may be wrong in this, so wait for more input but, I think 98 has a limit of 1G, if it has a limit at all.
I would be curious to hear the reasoning behind that one http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
If it doesn't recognize it, why do you see a performance increase???

Windows 98 can in theory use upto 4GB (if it can address it it can use it), but as practical limit 1GB is it, but it has problems with actually using more than 512MB (by design...you need to make special adjustments to get it to properly with 512 or more). It is just that after some where around 100MB there is little or no improvement to system performance. This was something to be concerned with when memory was running a couple of bucks a meg...well now that it is a few cents a meg why not run it upto whatever you want (like what you can put into it and not blow more money than you would by taking your significant other for a night out at the movies...or motherboard max (if the board is a couple of years old that very well could be 512MB))
