Kinda a newbie question but how fast do dvd roms read cds? Is there like a formula for it? Sort of like 8x dvd = 40x cd? If there is no formula, how can one tell how fast cds are read when buying oem parts?

hi,
I don`t know the formula but i am sure that someone can give it to you. Anyway, even if OEM, you can find this information in the manufacturer site of your DVD rom. I am also aware of the fact that anything above 32X is more than enought due to a physical limitation related to the spinning process of the disks or something like this, so I wouldn`t bothe rtoo much.

#!@$*%.....just format the damn C:
It should be listed on the drive specs.
Something like 4x16x.
If it is not on the OEM drive or package you should check the specs by model number .
There is no formula to speak of each company builds them to what they think the public wants

Yoda, et al..
Just finished reading the PC-DVD GUIDE and they addressed this very issue. The "rule of thumb" a 1X DVD is roughly 6X for a CD-ROM (1-3gen) . The newer (4th gen) are approximately 10X.
A bit of an oversimplification perhaps...but then I like to keep things simple...I don't know where I'm going with this! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
