View Full Version : Continuous Beep after swapping PSUs

When I replaced my old PSU with an Antec Quattro 850 (no, I don't need that kind of power, but CompUSA was shutting down and selling these for $90), I booted up (or tried to  ) and was greeted with a loud, continuous beep - not pulsating, but continuous, more like a siren. The Beep message research I've done indicates that this is caused by a short, a loose connection, or a power failure.

Right now I'm trying to decide how to proceed with troubleshooting. I do recall, however, that both the chassis and the CPU fans were operating when I powered up and heard the noise. I shut down immediately because it just scared the **** out of me.

By the way, my mobo is an Asus P4P800-E deluxe, and my case is an Antec Sonata. I mention this only to note that, although I have loved this case up unitl now, I find that you can't swap out PSUs in this box unless you do some major shuffling around. I had to select between actually sawing out part of the PSU mounting structure, removing my entire mobo, or just removing my heat sink and fan. I chose the latter, and had to go through the hassle of cleaning the contact surfaces and reapplying Arctic Silver.

If anyone has suggestions about how I should best proceed, I'd appreciate hearing them. Thanks.

The continuous siren sound usually means the CPU is overheating, the fan is not spinning at high enough RPM's or not spinning at all. Since you reinstalled the heatsink I would make sure it is seated properly and that the CPU fan is plugged in and working correctly.

Also make sure you didn't plug the CPU fan into another fan header by accident. If the motherboard doesn't sense the RPM's on the fan on the CPU fan header it will give the siren warning.

Got it fixed. There were 1 and possibly 2 culprits:

1) The connector to the CPU fan felt a little loose. I tightened it, but the siren occurred again when I powered up.
2) I found that a power connector was almost detached from from my X-fi sound card. I plugged in in tightly, and the problem was solved.
