So I bought a 22" LCD and I hooked it up to my pathetic VGA-only PCI graphics card (FX 5500). I set the resolution to 1680x1050 and everything looks nice. But when I watch movies, it's very dark and almost unbearable to watch night/dark scenes (brightness all the way up). I watch the same movie on my powerbook, and it's much brighter. Is this because of the analog connection? If I get a better graphics card to connect my display using DVI-D, will I get brighter picture?
Thanks for the help.

theoretically yes.
DVI monitors would be "Better". But it mostly depends on the actual monitor, (its contrast ratio (eg; 1:10000))

I have the LG 22" which has 3000:1 contrast ratio; 300 cd/mē brightness. But I'm guessing those specs are for the DVI connection.

i have no idea what the specs are, but your LG 22' should be fine. what are the controls in the GPU settings?

It may very well be that resolution is just too much for that old video card to pump out quick enough to make it a good picture during a movie.
Try messing around with the overlays in the nVidia display panel. It might help. I believe you can even associate the overlay with certain apps so it only applies when you start a movie.

if i recall corectly, the Nvidia control panel has a special "Video overlay" with it OWN brightness. This could be turned down. (ATI has something similar)
