Hi, my old pentium(1) has 16Mb of EDO RAM, I recently wanted
to get more EDO RAM, but then I opened up my PC and saw that
my motherboard had 4 EDO slots (2 being used) and 2 SDRAM slots
(capable of 128Mb each?).
I then took my PC to my local computer store, there they took
out the 16Mb of EDO RAM and put 128Mb of SDRAM in one of the slots that holds SDRAM, but when the computer booted, it read it as 32Mb.
I would like to get another 16Mb of EDO RAM, but it costs more than what
i'm willing to pay for cosidering a very slight performance boost?
He also tryed 256Mb of SDRAM, but that didn't work either, reading that at only 16Mb's when booted.
After this he said my motherboard has some "issues", now, would it be the motherboard? which is a " Gigabyte - Intel Triton VX Chipset Motherboard " by the way, or could it be something else?

Hello Enemy,
You say that the SDRAM slots are capable of 128. Where does that info come from? Sounds like you need to try a different shop if that is the best he can tell you.
If you have the MOBO manule and it says 128 is the max per slot, then there is probably some info on what you need to do for it to accept it.
If you don't have the manule, you can go to their website and get more info.
Post back with that in hand and we can go from there http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Please let us know if what we suggest helps. This helps us help you better.

Bassman, the "tech" guy in the shop said so http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif , he said I could easily have 256Mb, 128Mb in each.
I haven't got the manual, and the best seach results were of "HX" type, not the "VX" which is what I wanted.
The store I went to, well, I don't know what the equivilent would be in the US, but it's basically a big chain of stores, employing usless "technicians".
Would a smaller PC store be a better choice, that is, if I wanted more info?

Hey,
If it's the 430 series, the Intel Triton VX chipset will only recognize 2-clock SDRAM. Most, if not all, SDRAM on the market today is 4-clock. That's why the machine is not recognizing the full amount of memory.
You are better off going with EDO RAM with that chipset. Additionally, don't try to install more than 64mb total, (4x16mb) or the machine will drag. That chipset will only cache 64mb. Any more than that, and the machine will choke. Been there, done that.
You will see a performance increase going from 16mb to 32mb, and even a bigger increase going from 16mb to 64mb. I realize that EDO memory is expensive, but you might try either www.computersurplusoutlet.com (http://www.computersurplusoutlet.com) or www.accessmicro.com (http://www.accessmicro.com) for reasonably priced modules.
You can use the SDRAM, but only if you can find some old 2-clock modules. I may be wrong, but I also think that the maximum amount of memory that the DIMM slots will recognize is 64mb.
Good luck.

Thanks Big Blue,
Is 2 clock SDRAM rare these days? The same as EDO RAM?
I have 4 EDO RAM slots, can I buy EDO RAM in a 32Mb stick?
Because thats the only way I would be able to get to 64Mb.
Also, is the "clock" of SDRAM like the amount/number of
pins on EDO RAM?
About how many pins would my EDO RAM be?
