View Full Version : My "Turbo" Button.

I was just wondering if it would actually speed up the
computer by pressing the "turbo" button.
I have an old Pentium(1) with 16Mb of memory and a 2G HDD.
Well, would it? or shouldn't I bother about it?

bet that is already most likely set to "Turbo" in your BIOS otherwise it probably would not have enough power to even boot.

Actually that's a bit misleading, turbo was used on earlier systems, turbo is normal speed, de-turbo slows it down to enable the machine to run with older programs. With Pentium systems it's rarely used, but won't hurt to try it.
I may have that backward, but don't think so, haven't looked it up in a while though. On most systems I build I put a jumper on the turbo header on the motherboard so it can't be turned off, since it's not needed on Pentium systems. I just don't hook up the LED...or the switch...on 486 or slower I leave it, comes in handy now and then. Try playing Zork on a 486 with 32MB... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif lasts about 3 seconds...

What speed is Pentium?
On old 486's they had what was know as a clock doubler.
Paleo Pete is right pentium systems don't really need them.
Is it hooked up on your mobo?
There should be a wire running from your turbo button to your mobo.
If so like YODA74 said"OHhhh BE Daring push it!!"
Stand back it's the daring thing ha,ha. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Turbo button is used as a graphic's booster. As in games. As in the old-days.
Still have one of those dynamic units setting in my store room.
By all means push that button. And hold on.
Luck.

Actually, I pressed it the first day I got it (late 98) and its been
pressed all that time, I decided to finally see if there was any
actual performance boost by unpressing? it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
And well....every program I have, also every game I have, works
exactly the same. I then decided to see if the turbo button
cord/wire(mentioned above)was actually connected to the motherboard, it
was.
Shouldn't the computer run slower, now that I have 'unpressed' it?
could the wire/cord/lead be faulty?
could my cpu be faulty?
could my motherboard be faulty?
could I be faulty? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

unturbo runs at half processor speed, how much you want to bet that the BIOS is set top "Turbo Mode"?
and no offense but from the questions you're asking I don't think you want to go into the BIOS.

take our word for it, all is well... enjoy.
