I have VHS tapes at least 20 years old and though they are still in good shape I know it is imperative that I download to my PC and then burn to DVD.

I looked at NewEgg's offerings but there was really nothing there that had a solid rating.

ZipZoomFly has a number of them but I don't know a good one from a bad one.

Nor do I kknow exactly the type of software I need for this project. I do have Nero 7 Ultima Edition. Will that suffice?

I know you get what you pay for but $ doesn't necessarity equate to quality. I wouldn't even know what a good budget is to consider for this endeavor.

As you can tell I am totally out of my element here. :) I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks.

Here is what I use
Dazzle Video Creator Platinum

http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Dazzle/Dazzle+Video+Archiving/Dazzle+Video+Creator+Platinum.htm

The good part is it will not require a video card change
Plugs into a USB port and connect it to you video output
Then capture the video and save in any format you like

I save it to the Hard drive and burn it later

$89.00 for the unit and software

I use the Dazzle DVD Recorder, but, should have purchased the Dazzle Video Creator Platinum.

Have you looked at the upgrades for it yet?

In a few cases it is cheaper to buy a new unit with Platinum included.

That is what I did a few years ago

But today the Dazzle Video Creator is about twice the price
$45 or $90

The $90 is a better idea

Rick, I looked at the Pinnacle product you suggested but I had no idea as to how good it is. Thanks, I'll look into it.

I did and if I remember correctly it turned out to be a little over the cost of the platinum.
Shame on me for not researching a little better.:o

While your looking
You will see a number of reviews.
One guy must have spent days posting the same review on every site..

But they all have one thing in common
Vista and the retail version don't like each other
It requires an major download of the Vista installation files :(

If your running XP
Then it is a simple 1,2,3 and your up and running

A few things to think about.
All video editing software likes and Needs memory
The more installed the better ..

It also has the side affect of making windows and programs run better

You will note on the reviews out there they don't give system specs
Why not?
Could it be they want to edit videos on 512 or 1gig of memory
If so don't waste the time, effort, or Money

Spend the few extra $ on more memory and run what ever you like

I am running XP Pro with sp/2 and 2 gigs of RAM. Will that amount of RAM suffice?

I use it on a rig with XP Home and 2GB of Ram with no issues .
