View Full Version : 3 IDE channel mobos, do they exist?

Does anyone know of any motherboard with 3 IDE channels instead of the classic 2? I would like to have a CD-ROM, CD-RW and internal ZIP drive all in one PC and considering that I cannot use the ZIP on the same channel of the hard disk (would slow it down) I was thinking of a mobo with three channels. Do you know any?
thanks

No, but four channel models do exist....usually they are an ATA/100-RAID model but you don't have to use the RAID, or you can get an add-in controller card for about $30 that will add two more IDE channels to your existing mobo....

ASUS makes some Motherboards with four channels. I have run two systems, and one has an ASUS A7V133 Socket A Motherboard and am very happy with it.

I have three physical disks, a CD ROM, and a CDRW. I could have up to 8 IDE devices if I wanted to. I do not have any need for that many, and there are some complications with certain combinations of devices. I might add a fourth hard drive and a DVD, which should not be difficult.

Well, lets see... Here's my configuration:

IDE1: DVD & Zip250
IDE2: CD-RW
ATA1: Hard Drive (60GB)
ATA2: Hard Drive (30GB)

In addition, I have a Promise RAID Controller plugged into the PCI bus that also has two master/slave ATA/100 channels on it. On each of those channels I have a 40GB Hard Drive configured as master in a Raid0 configuration amounting to 80GB of additional hard drive space, for a total of 170GB. I use the two ATA hard drives mostly as backups for the Raid0 array. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Notice that there are no slave devices except for the Zip250, so I could conceivably add 5 more devices if I wanted to, for a total of 12!

P.S.
Yes, mine is an ASUS A7V133 Socket A Motherboard, and I'm also very happy with it.

I would think having that many drives running would cause a power supply problem unless you have a 450W or you are running 2 power supplys I don't think you would have enough +12V and +5V power to reliably supply all drives and the rest of your system http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
