Ive got a comtrend router and a Belkin network card in the back of my desktop PC so i can connect my laptop and PS3. In my desktop taskbar it shows a little green box and 100 percent 54mbps full strength. Last night the green box disconnected itself and now its a red box. When i run my mouse over it,it says "wireless connection unavailable".
I have tried to enable it and it wont do it so i had a look in my network connection settings which there is just a red cross through the 2 little PC's.

I thught it maybe the driver or something so I reinstalled the driver and it still doesnt have a wireless display anymore.

I went into my router settings and WIFI is enabled.

Does this sound like my Network card has packed in or is there another problem? Iam still currently using the same router to connect to my internet because I connect my desktop PC via a LAN cable but now my house isnt WIFI anymore.

How common is it that the network card can break down????????
Am i sure its this??

Help or any advice please

I have had this working for 3 months with no problems. It seems strange that it just sudenly disconnected itself.
The network card is definately plugged in tight onto my motherboard

Ps when I go into Run---CMD---ipconfig it says that the media state is diconnected
Ive even tried with the firewall off

wireless connection unavailableThe WiFi adapter is not detecting the wireless signal from the router. I suppose the router or the adapter could be faulty but interference could be another cause.

I think you must try with another adapter (with direct line of site being best) to be sure its the adapter and not the router. Resetting (and certainly rebooting) the router (and the PC) might also be worth a try.

I tried resetting the router and the same problem occured.
I wonder if its a good idea to disconnect the network card from the motherboard after taking off the driver and reinstalling it.
I did try and remove the driver from device manager and sucessfully detected it next time i rebooted so the card is definately plugged in ok to my motherboard..

Its funny that the usual signal says 100percent/54mbps but seconds before it stopped working it just said it was 2mbps...... then stopped.

Does anyone agree that this sounds like a faulty network card? How often do these things break down??

I personally would suspect a hardware problem though Windows (which version??) can often behave very strange. Other peeps may well have other ideas or know how commonplace failure may be. The only other thing would be to point you to the "font of all knowledge (http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=wireless+adapter+failure&btnG=Google+Search&meta=)".

iam using XP service pack 2.
I have even tried 3 belkin drivers including the latest one but the same problem occurs, plus ive used a spyware remover as a last resort

It seems strange that I watched it stop working when the pc was on. Its not as if i have downloaded a program that has conflicted. I was mearly just browsing at the time when i saw the little icon turn from green to red.

Belkin driver can test the connection and here is what it read.

LOOPBACK...PASS
IP...........FAIL
GATEWAY........FAIL
DNS...........FAIL
WAN........PASS
HEARTBEAT.....PASS
BELKIN......FAIL
YAHOO.........PASS

the wireless router is still fully working and is connected to this pc right now.All WAN on it is enabled.

Do you have security enables in the router?

i have enabled a WEPkey.Ive even tried disabling the security.

Ive just reinstalled the router driver and it hasnt done any good.

Looks like im gonna have to buy a new router.I think it must have broken unless i can try something else

Belkin router?

Have you done a complete reset procedure on it? That includes holding the reset button down for something like thirty seconds while powering it on?

I have a comtrend 536+ router and a belkin network card.

One thing I have noticed as well is that i have tested the connection on my PSP and it shows up with 2 wifi connections....for example.

wlan1............12% strength
wlan2............100% strength

And for some reason Wlan 2 keeps disappearing and reappearing, i.e if i test it again it will only show the weak strength of wlan 1

ps i have resetted too(for 30 secs)

Change the channel on your network. One of those connections could be a neighbor that is now interfering with your connection.

One of those connections could be a neighbor that is now interfering with your connectionInterference has been on the cards from the start. You could try turning off your own router and see if any connections are detected to confirm this as a cause.

Yes ive turned off my router and WLAN1 is still showing which confirms that this connection isnt mine however wlan2 is.
So why does wlan2 keep switching itself on and off when it feels like it and really only comes on now for a few seconds occasionally?Ive changed from channel 1 to ch 5 and so far its showing 100 percent. This couldve solved the problem..only time will tell i guess but if it has then is it normal for someone with wifi(me) to change the channels because ch1 used to work sucessfully for months.??????

ok seems to be connecting fine now thankyou.I think it just needed a channel change however I now cannot get on the internet with my wireless devices(psp).
It finds my SSID ok but when it tests the connection it reads....
"A CONNECTION ERROR HAS OCCURED. A CONNECTION TO THE ACCESS POINT COULD NOT BE ESTABLISHED. CHECK THE SECURITY SETTINGS FOR THE NETWORK AND TRY AGAIN"

ok i went into my routers security settings and i have a WEP enabled which is the 13 number/letter key which is located underneath my router. The key is correct because ive checked it 3 times. in the settings it shows this as the network key.
I have put the same WEP key into my PSP under the WEP settings so why isnt it connecting. My router is set to enable and to WEP.

Im going round in circles here!!

The WEP key printed on the router must be a default setting. It could have been changed ?? Does it connect if you disable WEP or use it and then set your own spcific key or better still use WPA if that is an option.

Going round in circles is common with networking problems in my experience! ;)

ive changed the wep key on the router and entered the 26 numerical number on my wireless device*128bit connection and i still get the same error.
Even when ive disabled the routers WEP it still has an error dispite showing 100 % signal

The most common reasons for having a good signal but no connectivity are the wireless security or a firewall blocking or else something very astray with your network settings such as duplicate names or IP addresses. What, for example, is the output of ipconfig /all and are you sure all firewalls are disabled?
