Is it actually possible to have more errors and have a slower machine if you insert new ram? This is assuming that they run at the same speed.(pc100/133).

I just want to take this oppurtunity to express my gratitude to this forum. I'm a networking student in Ontario Canada and this site was recommended by the school and it has helped me a lot in and out of my studies. People here are informative, friendly, and patient. As I go through the posts, I've never seen one person being flamed or patronized. This is one of the best forums I've ever joined up with and it's saved my butt on more than one occasion. So thanks to all them senior members, and congrats to Paleo Pete for being a good moderator and making this a forum that anyone can hang in.

(I say this now since I've been here for a few months and I usually just ask questions and basically usurp the knowledge from the senior members. So to even out my karma, I write this message. Later guys.)

Hey,

Thanks for the nice comments. Pete does a superb job of maintaining order and Charles has designed a fabulous site. For a lot of us regulars, it's our home away from home. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

In answer to your questions, yes, it is possible. It all depends on the motherboard and chipset.

Some motherboards are finicky about which RAM they tolerate the best. Some chipsets, albeit, older ones, could only cache RAM up to a certain amount.

Motherboard DIMM slots for SDRAM will usually have limits as to the size of the memory module they support, as well as the total memory supported by the motherboard. I would imagine that RDRAM is the same. The FBS of the motherboard will dictate which speed of RAM is best tolerated.

Some RAM modules can be faulty from the factory.

As you can see, there are a lot of different variables that go into troubleshooting RAM and system problems. Each situation is different.

Cheers,

Big Blue 66
