i currently have the computer,

Packard Bell iMedia 1601
AMD Athlon 3000+ 2.17 GHz
512 MB RAM
80GB Hard Drive (But 40 at the moment)

When i went to PC World a while ago, i was looking for a new processor, so i asked them which would be best suited for my computer. After he did some checking on his computer, he told me that my motherboard can only fit that one processor which is already installed.

If i was to buy a new motherboard i was wondering if anybody could recommend which to purchase. Although there are a couple components which i would like to keep if possible.

The first is my graphics card, but the only problem is that it is an AGP slot not a PCI express (i know that most the motherboards and graphics cards nowerdays are PCI Express)

The second is my RAM, which is DDR 184pin. but i prefere to keep my graphics card rather than the RAM.

I also have 2 USB slots at the front and 2 USB slots at the back so a motherboad which could support this would be ideal.

As well as the motherboard, it would be handy if you could recommend the processor needed for the motherboard that anyone will recomend

Any idea's would be greatly appreciated

.....

the only thing worth salvaging is the HDD & CD/DVD reader.

both of which, new, costs a total of $100.00

Y? AGP is expensive because it is getting rarer to find.

out of curiosity what is the card name/ manufacturer.

persoanlly, i would make this PC into a server and build a new one from scratch

And then you opened the box...

You may get lucky and get £50 for it on ebay. AGP graphics cards are not worth a lot (used). And if you paid that much, six months ago, you probably paid too much to begin with...

it was a ATI Radeon (not sure which model) it was a 256 tho.

i am now thinking about putting the graphics card in the downstaires computer with my ram, maybe motherboard and maybe hard drive.

is there any things that people may recommend for me to keep in my current computer and what motherboard/processor to buy

KEEP:
Monitor, Case, Power Supply IF it is larger than 500W.

Get: an X38 motherboard, 3870 or 8800GT (or higher- the 9600 is equivalent to the 8800GT), An E8400 or higher CPU. And compatible RAM.

The main problem with your computer is that the hardware is specialized on the machine, which disables the user to be able to change out hardware. All big companies do this so that their customers keep on buying new systems instead of upgrading individual hardware pieces (like your CPU)

That is why I recommend you not to buy anything for the computer and save up to build your own.

An X38 motherboard (ANY)
A 500W+ PSU (Thermaltake, zantec, antec. OCZ)
An E8400 or higher INTEL CPU
DDR2 800 (MIN) 2GB RAM
3870RADEON or Geforce 8800 GT 512 (MIN)

Case- any full tower case you like
HardDrive: you might be able to salvage that..... but personal preference
