I have been running XP Pro for a long time no problem. I have just upgraded with new AMD 64x2 processor, BioStar MB, EVA GT7600 card and 500watt PS.
When I went to boot up after adjusting some BIOS options, it would just go to
the (boot normal/safe mode) screen. When I selected either one it would just re-cycle back again. I changed the first boot device to the CD and used the
XP disc to boot up. When windows finally did boot I find that I am now missing all previous XP updates including SP2 and my restore points are gone. Now the real kicker is I can navigate favorite web sites fine but if I go to the microsoft web site I can go around in it until I try to select an update and then the screen freezes and I have to end the task to unlock it. I expected some problems but surely not this. I would appreciate any imput.

I'm guessing that you used the previous install and did a repair (with your boot from the CD)...in that case you still need to install all the drivers for your new motherboard...chipset, audio, video, lan, etc...then try to work on the XP updates.

When doing a 'core change' it is usually best to make a clean install than try to make the old install compatible with the new hardware. Windows is capable of making a migration, but it isn't designed to make that migration easily...in fact as Windows gets 'newer' the difficulty level of migrating to new hardware without a fresh install increases.

Thanks, I'm having no luck at all. I guess I will get a new hard drive and do a fresh install and then use the current drive as a secondary
