hi guys, i am very confused and clueless. I have Verizon Fios and a black router that allow my desktop and my laptop (wireless) to connect the internet. Can this router be setup to make a home network? where i can access a folder in one pc from another pc and mostly print a doc wirelessly from my living room by sending the print command to the printer attached to my desktop upstairs?
thankyou

What manufacturer/model number did they provide?

If you hit RUN>CMD>enter>and type IPCONFIG,
what range is the first octect of the IP address?

Looks like that one has wireless-n & wired LAN capability, and the answer to the original question is Yes.

I would start by making a wired LAN.
There are 4 open RJ45 ports in the back of the unit where you can connect a Ethernet patch cable into the router. You simply connect one cable between each PC and the router, then boot the PCs. The PCs should now each have Internet access.

Now that you can access the Internet from all the PCs, you can start sharing resources between the PCs and other devices on the LAN, we can start that sequence once you are finished with the above.

done! in reality , my desktop is connected via wire to the router, the laptop is wirelessly connected to the router, do you still want me to connect it using a wire?

No, the sharing of resources is the same whether the connection is wired or wireless.
We do need to know the OS on each PC, ie XP Home or XP Pro, or other similar info.

They are both XP, desktop Pro and laptop Home, oh and soon I will be receiving a 2nd laptop with Pro.
ps so that you know, the above mentioned router has no USB port! i don`t know if this matters

Try making a new folder on each PC.
Share each of the folders, and grant Permissions per the information our member Ghost_Hacker gives in this old thread:

and a bit more explanation here:

Please note that because one of the PCs is using XP Home you must use Simple File Sharing (that's all Home supports). So Simple File Sharing has to also be enabled in the XP Pro PC.

The object here is to be able to view the file from the other PC.

Sharing Printers will come next if we can get you up to speed on sharing files and folders.
