Many motherboards very often have an infrared connector that can be used for a remote control activation of ....what?.....well I would really like to know why I should have an IR device on my computer?

No really, there are a few devices that this might be very helpful. You could use a remote control to access functions on audio or video devices in your computer. If you use a handheld or laptop, you can use this to transfer documents. It can be used as a network pathway, but distance and line-of-site a critical.
It was supposed to be so much more vast than that, but I don't think it has really taken hold like was hoped.
