My wife has an eMachines T3304 computer initially bought just for internet access. She has since started gaming, and wants to upgrade the video. I bought her a GeForce 8600 GT card. After I installed it in the PCIE slot, the card seemed to work fine until I rebooted the system a couple of hours later. Once I rebooted the system, it defaulted back to the onboard video. I have not been able to get a video signal from the card since then.

I found one problem and corrected it. The power supply was a 300 watt, and the card calls for a 400 watt or larger. I have already replaced the power supply with a 450 watt, but still no luck.

There is no option in the BIOS to disable the onboard video, nor is there a jumper anywhere on the motherboard to do that either. I have tried resetting the CMOS as well, again with no luck.

I have not been able to test the video card on another system, as my desktop is a bit outdated and does not have a PCIE slot. The card appears to have no physical issues (damage, heat, scorching, etc.). The cooling fan on the card spins up normally as well, so I know that the card is powered. There is not an external power adapter on the card either.

The monitor works fine on other machines, and with the onboard video on that machine. The machine posts and boots normally, indicating that the video is not returning an error during post. I can boot the machine with the monitor plugged into the video card and get no signal, then hot swap the monitor from the video card to the onboard video with no problems as well.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

Is there an option in the BIOS to select which is used first, onboard or addin card? That may be the best you can do, select the card as first choice...

There is (usually) an option in the BIOS. If you change the option and it changes back, you may need to replace the CMOS battery.
