I'm having probs downloading progs. rate is about 2KB ps average
(1.3 - 2.7 approx.)
Frequently after a couple of hours (about 85% download complete) the connection is broken & all is lost. Usually though I get a better download rate thereafter, but then the file is incomplete & I have to delete it & start again.
what happens to the 'part' of the download that was interupted? is it automatically deleted, or is it floating around as an 'orphan'?
I did try Download accelerator, which appeared to increase the download rate for a time, but when the connection was broken, I lost the file, even though it was supposed to be 'resume' supported. then finding out that it was reported to contain spyware, I got shut.
Any suggestions for an alternative? I've seen some mentioned but can't find the threads.

Try metaproducts.com and look for download express. It's a free browser plug in - no ads, no BS. Doesn't look as "nifty" as gozilla (stay away from that!) but it works and there's no spyware. Quick download as well. Several weeks ago I was attempting to download a 165MB file from bmwfilms (over a dial-up connection!). The most I ever got was about 60% complete before the connection would tank. Download express let me resume and all is well.

Thanks. I have just downloaded 'Download Express'
What sort of transfer rate should I expect, with my existing setup? (ie: 56k modem. I have just spoken with someone from the other side of town who says that they are getting 45KB/Sec & their neibour 33KB/Sec whilst the file that I just downloaded showed 1.6KB/Sec. Similar setup & same ISP!
I think maybe something needs sorting before I use 'Download Express'

If they are downloading at those speeds they have a cable modem or dsl, youll never get that high we 56k. Now they might be surfing at those speeds but not downloading at 45, go google.com and put in modem speed test. Then click the first entry then go down the page and should be a 56k test , click that, then see what your surfing out.see ya

Hi there Vic
My downloads are usually about 3.8 - 4.3KB\s This seems to be normal for here in the Borders. This with MS downloader & with Download Accelerator Plus (Though when I d\load two or more together it drops to about 1.7 - 2.2)

modem settings were wrong.
Did a speed test = 660 cps (about 1/2 of a 14K !) (image loaded in 53 secs)
changed modem settings. test = 3,984 cps (image loaded in 9 secs)
Download rate (with download express) = 3.7 - 4.5 (sometimes less than 1 & sometimes more than 8)
Thanks for the replies.

start>>settings>>control panel>>modems>>properties.
it was set at 48000 so I changed to 57600 (speed of modem) this gave an increase from 660 cps to 3,900 cps. I then set it at 115200 which gave 3,984 cps.
