IE freezes solid

<<OK, I have tried for two hours to get Internet explorer to open as my browser. Without fail it freezes solid with the basic frame showing on the screen. Nothing can be input and the Ctrl, Alt, Delete which brings up the Task Manager shows the CPU usage as 100%.

I have deleted IE from my computer and reinstalled it with no joy (using Firefox).

Before I throw the entire thing out of the window in sheer frustration, can anyone suggest anything (in plain English please).

Unfortunately I need IE 7 to be able to send progress tests off to a provider. >>

1. Clear the cache/temp internet files. May have to be done manually...

2. AV scan...hard to do an online scan, so try with a free, full download, like ClamWin or AVG. A HijackThis log wouldn't run amiss, either.
