Should I have 2 csrss.exe?

Hi, When I look in the task manager I see two instances of csrss.exe. I read that if you have two then 1 is a virus. I looked in my system folder to see if there were two csrss in there but I only see one. Do I have a virus in the csrss.exe guise?

The one in the windows system32 directory is normal - other instances are not (http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/csrss.exe.html).

Moving this to the security section where posting a HijackThis log is suggested.

Does AVG come up with anything when you scan?

No it doesn't. Although when I scan in safe mode I get "Error in boot sector of disk" message displayed at the top of my list of infections. I have been told that this is ok but I dunno?

Dead threads would be closed or deleted. We do our best to follow up but it's easy enough to miss responses.

You are not the first (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080317105319AAoqC2e) to ask the original question. It looks as if the process can be evoked by more than one instance. In other words it could be in Task Manager more than once or not at all. What is relevant is where the exe exists on disk. If there is only one instance of the underlying executable then that is all that matters with this particular file.

There is no mention of it in the HJT log so it would not appear to have been invoked at the time when you ran the scan. I do not make a habit of reading these logs so don't take my scanning of it as gospel.

I doubt the safe mode avg message is of significance. It could be a Vista related bug or you could post directly on their free forums (http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?1,54168,54172).

Is your system behaving suspiously in any specific ways? If not and you have scanned with an antivirus and an antispyware application - I suspect the odds are that you are clean.
