I am still on dial up, which has never been particularly good. but recently have been having more and more 'connection time out ' messages. now I am unable to open pages although I can get on to msn.
the machine is desktop with 1.2 processor running w XP.
I was having error messages that the hdd was almost full (6Gb for O/S plus 40 Gb (partitioned ) for other stuff) I have now cloned the O/S over to an 8Gb hdd (just for O/S) which meant that the pc was running better but the problem persisted.

I thought that it was simply down to connection speed and amount of web traffic, but my laptop will connect. I do get some time outs but few, the laptop is running w XP also on a .333 processor.

the laptop connects at 48 kbps the desktop 32 kbps.

Could be line noise, bad phone wiring (IE: the line between your modem and the wall jack) or simply bad modem drivers that no longer work with your ISP's modem bank.

Here (http://www.midcoast.com/help/connectissue/modems/drops.html) are some other things to look at.

Good Luck :)
