I have this problem where programs that needs to connect to the internet can't, while my internet explorer can. In fact internet explorer is the only program that can connect to the internet. Which means my firefox (my main browser I use), avg internet security, utorrent, windows live messenger, aim, itunes, etc, can't connect. I first had a problem when my internet browsers wouldn't connect, so I sent it to a pc guy and he removed some spyware and fixed my internet connection, but the thing is only internet explorer connects now. There are 3 laptops in my house that work fine with programs that need connection to the internet. I am connected through my linksys router which is connected to my modem. Oh and my os is windows vista and I am using a desktop.
UPDATE: Now internet explorer can't connect ever since I upgraded to vista ultimate. I tried disabling my firewall but that didn't help anything. Help would be highly appreciated.

Check that your avg internet security is running as it should. I would even go so far as to uninstall it as a troubleshooting step.
As long as you have a connection to the internet and have tested that by using ping or other tools (telnet, tracert) then I would supect a firewall problem perhaps you misconfigured avg.
Good Luck :)

avg is currently uninstalled because a guy told me to do it, but that didn't solve anything

Try these steps. (I'll assume you have already had your ISP troubleshoot that there are no porblems with your internet connection at this point)
First ping www.pcguide.com You should get a reply.
Now telnet www.pcguide.com 80 once you get a black screen hit the space bar once then enter twice. You should see this:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
<TITLE>501 Method
Not Implemented</TITLE>
</HEAD><BODY>
<H1>Method Not Implemented</H1>
to /index.ht
m not supported.<P>
Invalid method in request <P>
</BODY></HTML>
Connection to host lost.
If you don't then you possible have a firewall blocking access or some other program which has "hooked" into your internet capable applications. I would boot into safe mode and make sure that all firewalls and internet security apps have been uninstalled.
Also check what programs currently are set to run at startup. This
link (http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/startup.htm) shows how. Check that nothing from your firewall/security apps has been left behind, if so disable them from starting
You might also look into posting a Hijackthis log (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=60009) here or in the Applications and Security forums.
Hope this helps :)

"telnet www.pcguide.com 80" would not work

So ping worked but telnet didn't? Telnet came back with a "couldn't connect to host" type error?
If so these errors would seem to point to a firewall issue on the host (your desktop). Try booting into safe mode with networking and see if you can use your apps then.
Did you install any programs or change your computer's configuration prior to these errors happening?
