View Full Version : msconfig / startup
With help from HP to speed up system, I unchecked several boxes in the startup tab to save on system resources. (New to windows ME and system running at 57% at that time) I didn't write down what NEEDS to be checked.
Does anyone know what needs to be absolutely checked? I thought I was helping a friend save on her system resources by unchecking some of her startup boxes, now I somehow lost her scanner icon that she used. Also her instant internet and instant email buttons no longer work. She has Windows 98.
Thanks in advance!
BT

The Icons you are talking about are probably the ones in the system tray that were comming on during startup. (the little box in lower right with clock and speaker)
You can create other icons on the desktop and then drag them into the quickstart area on the taskbar.
Buy leaving the boxes unchecked in the startup, you free up resources because the program is not always running. If you create icons, this is just a shortcut to turning the program on.
If you need help with this, post back and I am sure we can help.
OH YEA, almost forgot, there is nothing in the startup menu that must be checked for your system to work. There are certainly some things you might want, like the ones Yoda suggested. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Just reread, the internet and e-mail buttons can be turned back on by reading thru the computers documentation and reprograming them, if you can't find the checkboxes for them in the startup list. They should have some part of manufacturers name in them.

For the keys on the key board for hp. click on start>H.P. tools> keyboard manager.
Also be sure keyboard manager is checked in your strt up menu.

If you forgot what you unchecked in the msconfig Startup List, there is a folder calledDisabled Startup Items in Windows\Start menu\Programs
Msconfig copies shortcuts to disabled items to that folder.

Here's the list from Microsoft Tech-support (my personal conversation)regarding the startup keepers:
Scan Registry
PC Health (both)
System Tray
Load Power Profiles (both)
State Mgr
Task Monitor
Scheduling Agent (if you use it)
In your Ctrl+Alt+Del when loading software you would need only have Explorer running.
However, it appears that some of the Start Up essentials run totally in the background once enabled. I defer to the Microsoft Tech's advice for Msconfig Start Up.
Oh, I run Me...

Anyone know why Load Power Profile should be loaded twice? Once seems to work OK for me.

Kenja,
Are you running WinMe? The Tech didn't give a reason just said that both should be enabled just as with PC Health.

in win98se, I don't have 2 or even one instance of power profile loaded.
There were (2) by default, I used msconfig to unload one instance, then the other- no noticable difference either of the three ways.

SEA,
Not sure about 98's MSCONFIG, I would have to turn on my 98 machine to look, but, Explorer is not in the Startup list on ME.
As for an exact explination on PC Health, LoadPowerProfile, and why there are 2 of them, I don't have one. Never bothered to look it up. Check your Help File for info on that.
Whyzman, don't know why tech support is telling you you need all that, that is for you to decide and test.
I run systray(for the clock) and ZA, thats all.
This is definitely one for FAQ http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Whyzman: I've never dealt with ME, I was thinking of Win98. Just one of those Windows "Huh?..." things. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
PS: A fresh install of Win98SE gives me ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor, SystemTray, LoadPowerProfile (twice), SchedulingAgent.

no but exploer// when you do CTRL/ALT/DEL it is in there and that has to stay the thing is in w/me if you shut down systray and explorer and a couple of others your going to start having software problems take my word on this I have shut down every thing and within two days you have problems.
but i am not going to believe an on line tech about what should be and should not be fired up. as i see it systray and explorer and in w/me PC Health -- load power profile should stay IMHO but what do i know I've only had to re-do every thing 4 times since june 6,01 till now.(what can i say)?? It's a new machine lousy built or it;s just Me PUN Intended (oops) forgot about scanreg stays

LoadPowerProfile appears twice because one time it is run before the logon process (basically on of the very first things run that isn't really part of the system files) in case some decides to use the APM features of Windows before they login ( like go into stanby mode or something) and the second time is for "normal" operation. It is conceivalbe that if you have several user profiles you could end up with a loadPowerProfile for each user....if you don't use power management (you can stil go into standby on many machines if you don't, just have to do it manually) then it is NOT needed (that is what ist does load and enable the Power Management settings). PCHealth is the same and for the same reasons, it and State Mgr are part of the WinME restore feature...and if you decide not to use that then they of course are not needed either. Task Monitor helps keep track of what is loaded, order it is loaded in and other items so that you can have your disk defragged to make programs start faster (I believe it keeps the logs of this in the applog folder).
so in reality nothing is absolutely NEEDED to run at startup...you don't even need Explorer (uyou can change the "shell" and use someting other than Explorer -- file you have win 98 (not sure about ME ) you can edit the line in system.ini shell=explorer.exe to read something like shell=winfile.exe and run the good old file manager as the shell!
