How long would a CPU take to overheat (as in get fried) when it doens't have the heatsink and fan installed correctly? Because I think that's what might have happened to mine but I am getting differing answers to this question.

Hello Lynsey and Welcome,
It depends on what CPU you are running.
Highend AMDs flame out in about 1 second. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
Post back and let us know what you have and we can help better.

My boyfriend put his Duron 850 in my machine and tried to open up Flash, the machine crashed and now the processor won't work at all. I put my processor back in (Athlon 1.2) and it didn't work at all.

Well, now your talking about something completely different.
When you change processors without an OS reload, you effect the registry.
The possibility that his processor fried along with the MOBO is there, but I am not sure that an 850 Duron would go that far.
Do you get anything when you boot up? Is it possible that the RAM got knocked loose? Could the CPU be in the wrong position?
Here is a link for you to check out about how fast an AMD can burn up.

thanks for your help by the way http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

hmmm, sorry to say, it sounds like a MOBO. Have you got another board you can try the CPU in?

yeah i've done that, my processor doesn't work in another machine so i'm thinking they've both had it. does that sound right to you? i just need some proof for him cause he was the one that put the fan on the wrong way round!! i'll show him the vid.

That could very well be a possability. Me biggest concern would be, can the other board handle your 1200. If not, you are not going to be able to test it correctly.
Sounds like you know what your doing so I don't think that is an issue.
Also misshandleing can destoy small electonics. A static discharge that you cannot even feel will burn a CPU, RAM, Vid card, and even MOBO.
Good luck

A static discharge that you cannot even feel will burn a CPU, RAM, Vid card, and even MOBO.
A bit of clarification on a very good point.
2000 volts is the minimum you will feel, 2500 volts and you can hear it. (My sister heard one on the other side of her truck, above traffic noise, it hit my middle finger...about 1/4" of the tip of which was removed 20 years ago and is VERY sensitive...OUCHIE!!)
100 volts and sometimes less can fry computer components. I have a half dozen scrapped cards here from past carelessness...
That's why I always strongly advise grounding yourself EVERY TIME before you touch a part. AT cases are no problem, they can stay plugged in, with an ATX case that has no main power switch, you have to unplug it, keep your hand on the chassis when unplugging. Or wear a ground strap...

If the CPU you ran without the heatsink and fan was the 1.2 amd,
It takes 10 seconds or less to cook it or cook with it.
Check out this link below and files showing an AMD burning up in less than 10 second.
Toast in 14 seconds.

Lynsey....
Hate to be the Bad News Bear.
Your boyfriend owes you another Motherboard as well. Don't suggest using any more CPU's on this one as it will make a key chain out of those also.
I'm not an electrical genius but it has to do with shorts within the ZIF socket caused by the previous meltdown. Some boards can handle it and some can't. This is the second one i've read about lately.
My question is: why would your boyfriend remove a 1.2 T-Bird and try to play with an 850 Duron? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
Luck.
