My monitor and PC both power up fine, in the very beginning at least. The monitor shows the blue HP screen and then moves on to the Windows loading screen. Here is where the problem starts most of the time(other times it'll happen just before it loads the desktop or it'll even last 5-10 minutes on the actual desktop.). The monitor will go blank and the green power light turns yellow as if the PC is off, but the PC is actually still on. I've tried safe mode and it still happens, which makes me think it's a hardware problem. I've opened the case and there is very little dust. I've got an imbedded(is that the right term?) video card, so I figured if it was faulty then the motherboard would be too, in which case I wouldn't have even made it as far as I did on bootup. My guess is the monitor, but I don't really know. Should I buy a new monitor or could it be something different?

It could be the drivers...since it makes it to the point where they are starting to load, before shutting down. What is the last line showing, when booting into Safe Mode, before the monitor shuts off?

Also, more details...make/model of computer and monitor...motherboard info, if you can find it (HP is hit or miss with that kind of info...) and a time frame for when this started. Flavor of Windows and any recent updates (especially if you have let the HP auto-updater run).

PC - hp pavilion 513w
Monitor - hp pavilion mx70
Motherboard - trigem gl ve 2002052
Windows - XP Home

When it loads the drivers, there is a special one called "d347bus.sys" that says I can press esc to cancel(I never press esc though). The last one on the screen, just before it goes to another screen is "agp440.sys". It doesn't always shut off at the same point though. Once I got as far as opening the system restore window before it messed up.

It first happened about a week ago. I'm not sure about any updates, since I rarely use(my Grandma uses it), but I do know the auto updater was on.

Oh, when I mentioned the light changing colors in my first post, I was referring to the light on the monitor.

Well, tap f8, after the HP logo, before XP starts up and then select VGA mode...it is kind of like Safe Mode, but even more basic drivers...

I just did that and after the Windows loading screen a larger-than-normal arrow cursor was on the screen for less than a second before the problem happened again.

Well, there is always the try a different OS...

The easiest thing to do would be to download and burn a Linux LiveCD.

http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php

I prefer Knoppix or Ubuntu to try.

To burn the disk, you will need to use a burning program capable of burning images. Usually, there will be an option something like 'burn image as'...

If the LiveCD works, without errors, then it is a Windows problem. If not, then the likelihood of it being hardware related increases dramatically.
