View Full Version : System shuts down when in Standby mode?

Windows 98 SE, ASUS A7V133 JumperFree PC133/VC133
200/266Mhz FSB AGP Pro/4X Socket A Motherboard.

This problem is annoying, but not serious. When I put my system in standby mode via the Windows Shut Down Menu, it sometimes stays in standby mode for hours, but sometimes Windows 98 shuts down.

When it stays in standby mode, Windows starts up after any keyboard or mouse activity, which is what you would expect.

Sometimes when I return, I must use the reset button on the tower Case to restart the system. It then goes thorugh the entire bootup & Windows load processes. Sometimes, it activates Scandisk & complains about not being shut down properly.

The above actions seem random. At first I thought it had something to do with how long I left it in standby mode. Several times recently, standby mode was okay for 4 or more hours. Sometimes, Windows shuts down after being on standby for 2-3 hours. The monitor is blank with power on, but Windows 98 is no longer active.

It is like a tempermental person instead of a computer system. Does anybody have any ideas?

In CMOS Setup Power management, I am set to User Defined & disabled, which I think disables Motherboard power management.

In Windows 98 Power Management, I am set to Always On, Standby never, never turn off hard drives, never turn off monitor. I think this should prevent any automatic Windows Power management.

Hello Dinosaur,
I have experienced this too and don't really know why it happens. I have just written it off as one of those windows things.
Maybe someone here knows how to correct or deal with it, so hang in there.

I don't think that the computer shuts down while it is in standby mode. It may appear that way. It might be locking up on you while in standby mode.

Does this problem happen if you manually put the computer in standby mode?
Or does it seem to happen when it goes into standby mode by itself?
Are you using any USB ports? If so, might want to unhook them and see if you can wake the computer then.

There was a bug with Windows 98 First Edition that caused this with USB. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q189/5/91.ASP
But I noticed that you are using Win98 SE. It's worth a try though.

Other than that, I can't really think of anything else.

Good luck.

I have not heard of anyone that can make the so-called "Stand-by" mode work the way it is supposed to work.
Just another Windows experiment that failed.

It could also be how you have set you power switch behavior...if you have it set to stay off after power failure then it would seem like stand by shut it off but the power failure actually did it. It doesn't tkae much of a failure to kill it, just a split second actually and bam it's off. Down here where I live I gave up programming my VCR, microwave and other devices because of the short duration failures I get. I would say if you aren't going to be around the machine for several hours, power it down and save yourself the headache of waiting for scandisk to finish.

mine will go into Stand By (and out of it) just fine (manually), but I have to reboot to reconnect via my ADSL.

I don't use this Stand By as I am not on a LAPTOP.

I wake up= my computer goes on, I go to sleep, my computer goes OFF. (in between times, I will turn off monitor if away for an hour.

Been doing it this way since someone here pointed out that with the Athlon T_bird cpu running so hot...... prior to this I had left pc on 24/7/365.

Dinosaur,

I too have the A7V133 and it is indeed a tempermental thing-a-ma-jig! If you haven't experienced "middle of a download standby/hibernate (Me)terminal snooze" you're in for another treat! You do wind up hitting the reset button, however, since the modem port does not get properly shut down during the "deep freeze" scan disk is the least of your worries upon boot up! You wind up physically removing the modem to get the OS to release the port...naw, you don't wanna go there! LOL

Sounds like you have disabled what you need to disable. As mentioned, I have WinMe so they might be slightly different. I have the same settings you do on my Power Management and have not had any difficulties since doing so. Did changing the settings solve the "immediate" problem, but you're looking to get a handle on this to get it to act "normally?"

Received and Internal Server Error...although my name shows up as the most recent post...

Wanted to tag on an addendum:

Did you build your system or purchase? The ASUS A7V133 is very picky about PCI card placement. There exist hardware sharing slots which goes beyond IRQ sharing. There could be something activated for some reason during stand-by that causes a conflict and the resultant freeze. If you like, post your MB set up, in what slots you have what. Or, take a look in the manual on page 29 Interrupt Request Table and check which slots hardware share with others. For example, the AGP shares with slot 1...if using AGP you'd want to leave slot 1 open.
