Hi all,
I'm installing a new mobo in a case (my first time). The mobo came with a little aluminum face plate that is suppose to slide over my peripheral's ie: parallel port, serial port mouse and keyboard. My mobo match's up fine to the case without the plate. My question is do I need this little plate? Does it act as some kind of ground.

thank you

Wow, excellent question! I'm gonna take a shot at this cause I'm waiting for dinner...

You talkin' bout that weird looking piece of metal, looks like it has springy things on it and if someone unfamiliar with computers happened to find it lying on the ground...they wouldn't have a clue? That thing?

My hunch is that it applies a backwards pressure onto the board for anti-vibration purposes. With fans a whirling nuttins gonna be able to squawk!

I just had to guess on this one just cause those things look so intimidating! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Let's see what the Big Kahunas say it is really for....Oh, my dinner is ready.

Hello Fetladral....

The plate you speak of isn't absolutely necessary if you don't want to use it. But it makes the rear of the case look clean and probably has a code on it as to what each periphial plug is for.

Also, it could help with the airflow/circulation scheme of things within the case itself.

As a grounding device.... Nope.

Luck.

Could also be a secondary plate for different physical configurations. I just built my sister a P-III 700 on an Abit BE6 and it had an extra one, it was for boards that have the serial, parallel, mouse and keyboard plugs in different places. It wasn't needed, everything fit great with the original one. By the way, the computer runs great...

Just a guess...

"Does it act as some kind of ground." Sort of, it acts as an RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) shield. Depending on the case design and fan arrangement, it can also help attain the desired airflow.

"...do I need this little plate?" Nah, I'm constantly thrashing my hardware, so my cases run coverless more often than not.

I recived one with my new motherboard and had to use it because my board has onboard sound and wouldn't fit the normal backplane (yes that is what it is called) if yours fits don't use it if it doesen't fit the one installed in your case use the one supplied. (thay are used to install various motherboards in different cases such as a board with sound, NIC, or video in a standard AT or ATX case) If they don't supply one it's time to get out the Dremel tool and cut some holes http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Alright who messed it up this time!

BB_66 I'm using it right now. Since it only has one ISA slot and I didn't have a PCI sound card I'm in winmodem hell, the only modem she had was a PC Tel winmodem...PC Tel of all things...but other than that it's doing great.

P-III 700
30GB Maxtor ATA100
Asound ALS 120 sound
12X DVD ROM (doubles as CD)
Matrox Mystique video
128MB PC-133 (PNY)
ABIT BE6-II
Antec case

So far, it's running good with no problems at all, no lockups, no start up or shut-down problems, perfect Win98SE install first try, modem will be replaced later with a real one...
