View Full Version : W@K vs. XP
I have W2K pro. What are the advantages/disadvantages of it as compared to Win XP?

From my experience so far:
Advantages:
XP has improved driver support for a number of devices that did not have drivers under Win2000...almost every driver I have ever needed was installed automatically...
It starts up a fair amount faster than 2000...
Disadvantages:
It's a resource hog unless you turn off the "eye-candy" and go back to the normal Windows "Classic" Interface which is almost identical to 2000.
If you are an advanced user and like to mess around with system files and do other "unsupported by Micro$oft" tweaks, XP will attempt to thwart you at every turn (it took me an hour just to replace a keyboard dll to change my key layout)
A number of software manufacturers are "recommending" upgrades for their products to work under XP...
It costs $200 just for the Pro upgrade and you get to install it on exactly one system (unless you get your hands on the corporate edition or crack the activation)
That said...I have noticed no performance drop on my Athlon 1Ghz system with 768mb ram and I left the eye-candy on...another system, a P2 266 laptop w/256mb of ram performs noticeably faster with XP than it did running WinME (eye-candy off).
I haven't noticed any difference in overall stability (from 2000), although IE6 crashes a couple of times a week...

When all else fails, read the instructions.
768mb ram? My friend has 512 and I thought THAT was overkill!

Pretty much agree with goonz here on mosat of that, though it does have a fair amount of " prettiness" to it that's kinda gotten to me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
For the monewy i'd say stick with W2K right now; give us loonies a little more time to tweak on XP ( and a service pack release first ) before the average user should jump on it.
I've recently added another 512 PC2100 DDr stick to my system for a total of 1GB. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Is that overkill?!

Ok. I think I will just stay with W2K for now.
And yes, 1 Gb of memory is overkill. I think that anything over 256 is.

If the system can handle it then cram as much RAM in as possible, it is worth it.

I upgraded to 768mb so I could give my brother my 128s...as it is, I have my pagefile turned off and still haven't peaked at more than 300mb of memory usage...so I don't see much point in upgrading to the 1.5gb of ram the mobo will support...

When all else fails, read the instructions.
But you are able to turn Off the page file.
Speeding things up. By not having to wait for the hard drive.
Much Like being able to turn off the win98 swap file?
From what I have seen so far the more bells and whistles you have turned on the more memory you should have installed. Especially for the new interface / graphics

reminds me of another ignorant statement made a few years ago by a prominent individual;
..640k is all anyone will ever need..
