View Full Version : RAM Speeds?
HI Every1,
Just wanted to know what the speed rating is indicating when specified in computer advertisements. For eg -> 128MB SDRAM at 100Mhz. Doesn't the RAM goes as fast at the external bus speed of the motherboard, or is there a seperate highway for the RAM and the CPU to communic8 directly with each other??
Thanks and happy xmas to u all
Beno

Your RAM speed should match the system bus speed not the front side bus. the memory bus runs at the speed of the system bus (100 or 133) not the clock doubbled front side bus (200 or 266) unless you use DDRSDRAM or RDRAM that is a whole other ball game

I think Windows XP and Microsoft use more of my bandwidth than I do!

Hey Beno,
The 128Mgb rating is the capacity of that particular stick of RAM. The 100 Mgh is the max speed at which it will run. The SD means "Synchronous Dynamic" (it synchronizes with the mobo speed).
A mobo with a bus speed of 133 and RAM running at 100 will only get 100 out of the RAM. A mobo with a speed of 100 and running RAM of 133 will only get 100 out of the RAM.
Does that help? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey Bassman,
What I want to know is what is the difference between frontside bus speeds and system bus speeds and why are there different speeds.
Thanks for answering my Q's! :-)
Cheers
