Acer Extensa 5420-5687 firewire issue?

I have a new Acer Extensa 5420-5687 laptop. I am trying to connect my Canon HDV XL H1 High-Def camera to Premiere Pro CS3 via the 4 pin firewire port. So far I can't get my video software to recognize the camera. I do hear a sound when I plug in the 4 pin firewire. Initially windows XP recognized the new equipment as a canon camera. However, I can't get any of my software (i.e. P-Pro CS3 or the Canon camera software) to recognize the the camera is connected. It works fine with my PC. I updated the firewire driver with Dirver Detective.

I use a 4pin x 4pin cable to connect to the laptop and a 6pin x 4 pin to connect to my PC

Any thoughts?
