Hey all,
I was curious about something. I know that a DVD player can read CD-ROMs. My question is this, if the DVD player can only read at 8X max, does that mean CD-ROMs will be read at 8X? Thanks.

Manny;
No. That is the speed for reading DVD's, the CDROM speed is sometimes not mentioned, but should be stated in the specifications. 8X DVD's could be 24X to 40X for CDROM reading. It depends on each individual model.

CDROMS are read on their data transfer rate ( 150KB's ) so an 8X CDROM reads at 8*150 or 1200KB's. I believe DVD's read data at around 1.5 (?) MB's -so take that times 8 = around 12 MB's maxium transfer rate speed.

Very similar to USB 2.0's new transfer rate.

As I understand it: The DVD speed ratings are for data DVD disks. A movie DVD will always play at 1x.
