Hello,
A little more info might help. What did you do, if anything, just before this started? Have you looked in Device Manager to see if anything shows? Does the drive respond to a disk being inserted (autostart)? Any lights on Bootup? What have you tried, to correct this? Any other info involved?
Post back and I'm sure we can help from there http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

If you are running windows 95,98,me 2k
They don’t require the oakcd driver or the mscdex to be loaded

If you are attempting to run the cd in dos they yes you need them.

In windows you should start the system in safe mode and then use device manager to remove the cd-rom if it is listed then reboot the system and see if it finds the drive.
Also If in windows you are running the dos drivers you should disable them on startup.

Use the run command from the start menu and type in msconfig
When it starts you will have a number of tabs across the top.
Click on the autoexec tab and remove the check mark next to mscdex
then click appy.
Then click on the config.sys tab and look for the oakcdrom.sys line.
Again remove the check mark next to it.
then click on apply,

when you have finished click on OK and the system will reboot.
NOTE. Make sure all other windows are closed Before you reboot

there are several reasons this may happen one is that the ide cable to the cdrom is going bad or the ide channel on the mainboard is going out or it could even be a problem with windows itself I have seen this happen for all of these reasons usually if it is the ide channel there will be a error in the device manager page for the ide controller so check that and see what you find if there is no error there more than likely it is the ide cable that is having a problem or windows itself
