I am confused. I always thought these two devices were separate entities. Someone told me yesterday that it is just ONE piece of hardware that performs two functions. What's the dilly? When I buy a new computer, should I expect these two to be separate, or should I expect to see one DVD/CD drive?

hi,
you can have them both on the same drive, you savee space, no heat and a channel on the mobo, however I am not sure if you can make a CD to CD copy! someone else will tell you.

Hello,
Yes they do make a single unit that does both now. BUCK$$$
And yes you can have a single unit and copy CDs. You would first copy to your HDD, then to a blank disk in the burner.

As for what to expect in a new machine, it depends on who you get it from and how much money you want to spend.

Here is an example:
Pioneer's DVR-A03 introduces DVD recording to the masses. Its $600 price tag should be qualified by recalling that similar drives were priced around $3,000 just a year and a half ago.

Pros: Burn your own DVDs; massive data storage; multifunctional disc recorder.

Cons: Drive/media costs; no video capture software; slow transcoding.

Company: Pioneer
Price: $599.99
Available: Now
Category: DVD-R/R
Platform: Windows 9x/Me/2000/NT 4.0
Specs: ATAPI/EIDE interface; DVD-R/RW (2X/1X); CD-R/RW (8X/4X); DVD-ROM (2X-4X); CD-ROM (10.3X-24X); 2MB write buffer; analog/digital audio outputs.

THEY ARE RATHER HIGH STILL ANDTHE BURNERS IN THEM WORK FINE BUT I WOULD ALWAYS GET A CDROM BECAUSE THEY AREMUCH CHEAPER TO REPLACE OR DVD SO THAT YOU DO NOT WEAR OUT THE MOTOR IN THE ONE DRIVE DOING EVERYTHING WITH IT.
