Has the guy who's site this is stopped updating the guide part? I just saw the Topic Index and the newest chipset listed is a Pentium 2.

Yes... He has discussed that a couple of times in other threads... Essentially, he decided there are other guides available that are up to date and he has devoted his attention to other needs...

Did he recommend any others?

I am afraid that discussion was long ago... You would need to dig into older posts to find any clues about that, but it might be outdated anyway... I would just use Google or ask questions here...

How about places that's kind of like a book like PC Guide as far as your personal preference?

I don't have a preference... I came here for the forum and I rely on people here helping me when I run into a problem or using Google to find answers... The world of computers has gotten so complex that I am not sure any one site can really address the full range of information needed...
Others may have other ideas...

The guide is out of date but all the principles are still valid. It doesn't cover newer technologies, but there are for the most part very few new things honestly. We are pretty much using the exact same technology, only faster and smaller.
If you want to learn about how computers work it is still a good place to go. :)
If you are looking for what CPU is better, or benchmarks you won't find that. But it was never meant to be that kind of guide anyway.
