Hi I'm running windows xp sp2 with 1gb Ram and 320gb Hard Drive and just the other day I got BSOD on boot up. I installed a program which seemed harmless but it really wasn't after I restarted I don't know whether it was the program or the fact that I tried to boot to safe mode but it jammed so I shut down that caused to problem but the next boot up I had BSOD. I tried Last whatever that worked...BSOD, Safe Mode...BSOD everything gave me BSOD. So I was gonna try something I found on the internet about using recovery console but that wouldn't work for me. I came back from school and found out my dad was trying a few things(he's pretty good with computers) then I checked my Windows XP Disc Partition Screen and I had 1 partition Local Disc C[unknown] (thats what it said) and that was it. Before hand I had to Local Disc C and D, one hard drive split into 2. He told me all he did was check the hard drive with pre-boot programs and so on and I believe him so all of today and yesterday I have been downloading boot Programs like LIVE XP USB Version 2008 and 2007 and I have tried BARTPE but I seriously don't know what to do. I am getting a larger hard drive(740gb) soon but my main question is there a way to recover or back-up my data or some of it? I really need this and it is important to me that I get it back, I am not worried about re-installing Windows all I need is to backup my data. If this isn't possible If I get a new hard drive in the next couple of days, would I be able to access my "older" hard drive and copy/backup data from it or would windows be unable to read it? I would really appreciate any help given because this is extremely important to me. thanks. just to let you know I am writing this on my dads really weak laptop which struggles to download and the USB ports barely work.

You would be able to install the new harddrive as master and the old harddrive as slave and extract the important data that way. Easiest would probably be if you've an XP disc and use it to install on the new harddrive. Be sure to enter the BIOS and designate which drive you want to boot from.

Well, you could download and using something like Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ I believe this one does not require a harddrive to boot...it uses RAM and can operate from there. Potentially, you can access the C: drive then or wherever you have your important data. I believe this may also contain what you need to be able to burn CDs...or, perhaps USB support if you've a thumb drive to extract the data with...

Others here have used this Linux distro and know all the ins and outs...
