Hello, all!
Am I being especially dense, or is there something mysterious
with AT power supplies? When the supply is connected to the
motherboard, it works just fine. When the power supply is
sitting out on the bench with no connections to the computer,
it acts like a lump of cold metal.
Is there some connection I must make to use the power supply
for something besides running a computer? (This is an old
supply with just the +-12, +5 GND and PWRGOOD leads)
T'anks.

Yes the power supply needs to be hook to the motherboard to run. it shorts the black wire and green wire to cut it on. so when it not hook to the motherboard it has no signal to cut on.

That's not a good idea; you can short pin 14 (PS_ON) and 15 (ground) and the power supply will attempt to turn on, but without a load on at least the 5V line, it will immediately shut down (or burn out). Switching type power supplies such as those used in PCs will not run without a proper load
Interesting job you have there http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

THE POWER SUPPLY WILL RUN WITH ANYTHING HOOKED UP TO IT. IT DOESNOT HAVE TO BE HOOKED UP TO THE MAINBOARD. YES IT WILL RUN ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT DRAW MORE AMPS THAN THE POWER SUPPLY CAN PUT OUT

I often use an AT supply for testing purposes without a problem.
It has the front panel on/off switch intact.
No blown devices whatsoever.
