Hi everyone!

Well I decided to try to work on an old HP pavillion laptop for a friend of mine who wanted to have Windows XP instead of Win98. This computer will not be used for much, basically data storage and such. I suggested he get a new hard drive and after talking with HP support I got a 60GB hitachi travelstar. They say this computer will only handle up to 60GB. The problem I am having is that I can not boot, or get into the setup or BIOS settings. With the hard drive installed upon powerup I see the message hit F2 for setup. If I hit F2 the screen says auto detecting IDE Devices and freezes. At the bottom of the screen it says "Entering System Configuration Utility, please wait..." I have waited and nothing happens.

I did get into the BIOS by unplugging the hard drive and powering the system. This is the only way I can get any response from the system now and of course it shows hard drive memory as 0 because it's unplugged. I thought I could put in the system restore cd and it would automatically set up windows on this PC but now I am totally confused. the system doesnt do anything when booted with the cd in the drive! Can anyone tell me where I have gone wrong????

What's the exact vintage of the Pavillion; which model?

You could try resetting the CMOS and also ensure that the new drive is jumpered correctly and its connections/cables double-checked.
