I am in the process of buying a new Pentium III CPU but was wondering if someone could tell me the difference between a Pentium "OEM" CPU as compared to a Pentium "Retail" CPU. other than the price of course. Thanks - Jim
Warranty...OEM CPUs usually have a 30 day warranty while the Retail have a 1 year, and often times the retail come with a basic (approved by Intel) cooler often already attached.....

Thanks for the quick response. I'm not trying to be a pest, but I assume from your reply that "PERFORMANCE WISE" there is no diffewrence between the two??

Wellll,... that's open to debate-for instance i've received athlon's OEM that had the multiplier unlocked ( the l bridges on the chip closed ) whereas retail versions have had them cut.
Only reason that's a big deal is if you overclock.
As far as one being better than the other one-i doubt it, it would hinge more on quality of the manufacture for that chip batch, it's always possible to get ahold of a bad batch of cpu's i suppose-but all being equal, you'll not see any performance difference in them.

I bought an OEM CPU when I upgraded my PC and the bridges were cut. The only difference between retail box and OEM CPUs is the warranty and OEM CPUs don't come with a heatsink and fan. performance wise they are the same. The reason the warrenty isn't the same is because OEM CPUs are made to be sold to manufacturers building new systems and they(the OEM) are supposed to assume the warranty on the entire system. I bought an OEM CPU because I wasn't going to use a stock HSF and when you build your own system you don't get a warranty anyway. (if it breaks you fix it)

Alright who messed it up this time!

Reading the overclocking enthusiasts' sites, there was the perception that retail box CPUs were of higher quality and therefore capable of higher speeds. If you're running at the designated frequency, I'm sure you could never tell an OEM from a retail version.

Thanks - JimTHE OEM CPU ONLY HAS A ONE YEAR WARRANTY AND THE RETAIL CPU WILL COME WITH A THREE YEAR WARRANTY THAT IS SET UP BY PENTIUM THAT WAY SO IF ANYONE TELLS YOU ANY DIFFERENT THEY ARE WRONG. Iropnman,
A slight shift in attitude re your future posts might be in order.
1)no caps please as it is interpreted as shouting
2)I’m right everyone else is wrong; statements will be viewed as an utterance from a blowhard.
3)Using the reply button at top or bottom of page will avoid copying segments that we have already perused.
4)I have viewed your posts, and question your credentials to answer questions. Perhaps you should be asking them instead.
5)Are you reading as fast as you are posting? Your posts, from my prospective, add little to the subject in question.
6)For a “business owner”, your writing skills are atrocious.
7)I realize that I’m being a bit of an ass here, but slow down!
Edit: I make no claim to perfection myself. So start over, just absorb what is good about this forum, and attempt to emulate it.

What fixrupr just said, that's what I'm saying.
Is anyone else reminded of this (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000004.html)?
