Can some one tell me how do I access the processor on this computer? I need to replace the processor I have no idea what is the best way to access it.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Found this guide that might help in the dissasembly procedure:
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-a35/complete-disassembly-1.htm
This is the detailed specs for your laptop:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_outFrm.jsp?moid=429794&rpn=PSA20U&ct=DS&soid=638247&BV_SessionID=@@@@1380402896.1210951467@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceadeedmehmmdcgfkceghdgngdgmm.0
This should help you get started on deciding if this is something you want to continue with.

Thanks for the links. I am trying to revive this toshiba notebook. Some one changed the cpu in the computer and now it does not work. Fans don't turn, hard drive not spinning. Why did he fool with the cpu only God knows.
Thanks again for the link.

Before I try replacing this CPU in this notebook just let me ask a silly question. If the CPU is bad would it prevent the fan from operating? When turning on the computer there is no sound what so ever coming from it. It has the on off light, and another light the shape is almost square I don't know what light is it. But there is no had drive indicator light on or HHD sound. If its the CPU I could get another and replace it but if the guy broke something else that I can not see, it would be a waste. I would appreciate any reply on this.
Thanks
There is a chance that things just aren't connected properly...try breaking it down and then reassembling it according to the breakdown guide from above.

I went back to where this guy fooled with the computer, and I took the CPU out and put it back in carefully, everything seems to be in order but he took my friend good CPU out and replaced it, no one knows why, but I thing the CPU that he put in the notepad is no good, he bought it off ebay.
I know there is a gadget to attach to the HHD and transfer in data that's on it, I can't remember where I saw it or what it is called if any of you pros out there know what I am talking about please post, this guy has a lot of photos and documents he will like to saved from the computer before a really screw it up.
Thanks in advance of your post

Looking for one of THESE? (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=3.5+to+2.5+converter&x=0&y=0)
The easiest way would be to put the hard drive from the laptop into an external enclosure...

Thanks to both of you guys for posting your replies. I think I want to go with the external enclosure. I was trying to find how it works. After inserting the notepad HHD in the case, can you then access the drive from another computer? If thats the way it works, then I will go for it.
Thanks again.
That is exactly how it works...on ME and later versions of Windows it shows up just like any other USB drive/device.

Thanks for the info on this hardware. My friend will be very happy to know I can retrieve his photos and documents.
Thanks you!:)

You guys may not believe this, but I can not find a replacement CPU for this notepad. It uses a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz socket 478 (mobile). I cant find it anywhere on the web or a computer shows. I guess processors just don't go bad and there is no market for them. My friend got so frustrated with the computer he gave it to me. I would like to get it going.
The fact of the matter is that the market for mobile processors is pretty much taken up by the major manufacturers. It is doubtful that you can actually find just the processor. You'd probably have better luck finding one with a busted screen or case on ebay and going that route...
i didn't even find any 'parts only/as is' on ebay...

Would any of these (http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=socket+478+mobile&btnG=Google+Search) be compatible? Found lots of P4M's on Google, just need to know exactly the specs of your's before choosing one of the above.
But the problem is, with the information given so far, I'm not convinced it is only the processor needing replacement. Something else may have gone wrong (or was already) while your friend was inside mucking around...
Yeah, that's why I think one with a busted screen/parts only from ebay would be a good idea.

Thanks for the replies from you Fruss Tray Ted and mjc, like I said my friend gave up on the computer and got another one so this one is for me to tinker with. I will open it again and look around, I don't know what I would be looking for, unless I see something loose. The guy said he went into the memory area and the cpu. The laptop is not even three years old since he bought it new.
Thanks again, I migh have to come back to this thread soon.
Generally, you can't get access to the CPU without cracking open the entire case, so the chances of inadvertently disconnecting something are pretty high.

Well, this evening I opened the compartment where the CPU is located, and by removing the cooling element from on top of the CPU I could get to it. What I think the guy did is replace the Toshiba CPU with the one he got on ebay, but I don't think it was a mobile CPU, I have a pentium4 2.66 GHz 478 socket CPU and it looks exactly as the one he put into the laptop. Now, I have never seen a pentium mobile except for pictures on the web, so I can't realy say for sure if what he put into the laptop is mobile or not. I have a feeling it is not a mobile CPU. Is there any way to tell the difference between the two? I think they are the same size.
I also used a RS232 Tester hoocked to the printer port and turned the computer on and the TD and RD lights came on, not sure what that means.
Intel has a page on their site to look up processor information...copy the numbers off of it and enter them there.

mjc, thanks for the info.
I entered the number found on the cpu and this is what came back. It sure does not say anything about being mobile or for laptops.
Maybe a code in here saying it is but it is way above my pay grade. LOL

Looks like it isn't a mobile processor...
And putting a 'desktop' processor in there (when mobile processors are in the 30W range) without the proper cooling is a quick way to make it extra crispy...

mjc, I think that is the problem with this laptop. If I did not know any better I would have probably done the same thing. I could not believe it, when I matched up the two processors and see that they were identical. I just hope that when I get the right one, the laptop will work and have no further damage than just a bad processor.
Thanks again for all your help.

I just had to come back and report some or and progress on the laptop I am working on. The Pentium 4 2.66 GHz socket 478 that the guy put into the laptop even though it was not mobile should have worked. The problem is, he bought it on ebay for $50 dollars and it was no good. Like I said earlier I had one that I was going to put into my grand kids computer with a new main board but I dicided to try it in this laptop, and lo and behold, it worked like a charm. I googled "what was the main difference between the mobile and the desktop cpu" and what they said is that the desktop cpu in a laptop will cause to run hot and drain the battery real quick. I have not seen that as yet with this laptop. I charged the battery real good and ran the laptop from the battery for about 45 minutes and it still had about a third more to go.
