I have a PC that recently was in a flooded basement. The water got into the bottom of the case, barely. It did not touch ther motherboard at all. The only thing it appears to have touched is one of the power plugs for the harddrives/CD Drives.

I powered down the system and let it dry a few days and then decided to see if it would work and it powered up and worked for a day and a half. Then it all of the sudden locked up and would not do anything, even ctrl-alt-del did not bring anything up. I powered the system off, unplugged it for a few minutes and then tried to start it up again, but absolutely nothing happened. I tried for two days to get it going but got nothing out of it.

I bought a new case and power supply thinking that the power supply was blown but still got nothing when I push the button.

I am guessing the motherboard is blown now. What do I check to ensure that is what it is?

Thanks!

Jeff

The best thing you can do now is to try a bare-bones boot.
Remove the memory first and boot the pc. If it starts up you should get a beep code telling you "hey! I have no memory!"
This will indicate that it was a problem with the memory that caused it to not boot previously.
If it still won't boot, replace the memory and try another boot. It may have become unseated. You can then remove each component one at a time and try booting and see what happens. This will help you to identify what was causing the machine not to boot.
Most of the time when we get these questions on the pcguide it's the memory that is causing the issue, but that's not always the case.

For further help, please list the make and model of your motherboard.

I have a Mach Speed MK8-939A motherboard.

Also, when I hit the switch, absolutely nothing happens, no fans no lights no nothing!

Well, since it was tried and seems to be a working boat anchor...use it as such.

The pc is PROBABLY dead, but I will not repeat myself. Do what I suggested in the earlier post. It doesn't matter that you have no lights or anything; that is common with this type of problem. That is why there is a sticky about it. :)

If you still can't get to POST after doing boots without memory, video card, pci cards, etc... then the motherboard is probably dead.

"when I hit the switch, absolutely nothing happens, no fans no lights no nothing!"
Could be the switch is faulty; failing to short the on-switch pins on the mobo.
You could try shorting them manually.
If that has no effect, you might then risk shorting the green and any black wire on the power lead from the PSU to the mobo.
[Shorting the on-switch pins, then the green & black, with the PSU & mobo connected together].
That would manually do what the mobo aught to be automatically doing: shorting those to tell the PSU to go to full power.

Powering an ATX PSU without a Mobo! (http://www.virtual-hideout.net/guides/atx_psu_mods/index.shtml) [When the mobo isn't doing the necessary]

Kudos to Heartborne, I removed the memory and it starts up. It is still intermittent but I ordered some new ram today to see if I can revive the mobo and cpu.

In the mean time I ordered a new mobo combo after I thought my other one was dead and it came today so I get to install that one!

Great, good luck Jeff! You've got a brand new motherboard and RAM so I think you'll be okay. At least if you have any issues with this rebuild you'll know neither of these components is the culprit.
