Thanks for the replies. Haven't yet but I will check out the links supplied. On a related topic, can viruses/worms/etc be gotten merely by visiting a web site (i.e., not downloading anything etc, but just by linking to the site)?

Again, yes....some of the same exploits can be used to make a virus infect you from just visiting a site. That is why it is recommended to surf with at least some security measures, like disabling or restircting things like active scripting in IE......

This one is very interesting to me. Since I am writing web pages now, with many different code protocals and graphics programs, I find it would be very easy to insert a virus in the code of a web page.
Try this: R-click on an open area of this page, click on "View Source", if you don't see that option, try a different area of the page. A notepad doc will open with all the code that tells the browser how to "build" the page on your system.
When you open a web page, you are downloading that code to you harddrive. One could easily put a JavaScript line in there that when the page loads, it installs a little nasty for you. Ever hear of cookies?
If someone were very malicious, thay could build a very interesting and helpful Links page type site that had this code, carried a bug that didn't come to life for say, a month, and then come to someplace like this and recomend it to everyone here with a direct link.
I am not to sure about the ability of AV programs to stop something like this from happening as all they would see is a load of code being downloaded and handled by the browser. They allow this to happen without question every time you open another page.

If anyone has some info on what prevents this from happening, I would be very interested in seeing it.

OH YEA, my link below does not have this type of code I am talking about http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif just straight HTML http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif
