I have a 256mb GeForce FX 5200 AGP card (8x capable) plugged into the AGP slot of my FIC AU31 mobo, which is supposedly capable of running AGP at 8x. When I run Everest, the entry for my AGP bus shows 8x @ 4x. A warning note tells me that my AGP is running below optimum speed, that it may cause performance penalties.
I finally managed to upgrade the BIOS (neither FIC nor E-machines provided an upgrade, for those of you who aren't familiar with the excellence of the AU31), and I have AGP speed set to 8x there. I've got my aperture open to 64, if that makes a difference. Fast write is enabled. I've got 1 gig of memory installed.
Even after upgrading the BIOS, no dice. I uninstalled and reinstalled the card's drivers, using the most recent available, no good. I made sure all my hardware drivers and Win XP updates were in order. I have all of the Nvidia console settings cranked to max, though I can find no way to specify the AGP speed as 4x or 8x anywhere in the Nvidia software or in XP.
I notice in Everest's system resources breakdown that all of the (obviously) AGP-related resources seem to be listed as Shared or Undefined. My PC knowledge ends where these details begin - I know nothing about memory addressing or whatever these details are exactly, but could the lack of dedicated resources mean anything in this case? It's just a shot in the dark at this point.
Ideas anyone? Could Everest just be wrong? Any help would be much appreciated!
