heres a few question for you all.

1. when you ctrl/alt/del on w2k pro and go into task manager you get a window with three tabs at the top, click on the processes tab and you get a list of loads of .exe, that are running in the back ground. i have a mp3 player called Lava, and most times on win98 when i close this program it closes but is still listed in the close program window (ctrl/alt/del) and this is happening on w2k. i can see lava.exe listed in processes when the program is not runnig, if i click on this and then click on end task i get a warning message up telling me this is a big no no.
is it ok to end task on things listed in this window(processes)?

2. and when i defrag with a third party util is it ok to keep all the things in the processes window running?

spec:
w2k pro

The big thing about running defrag with anything running in the background is disk access can cauuse a defragmenter to restart and take a very long time to complete...now some third party defragmenters hve various levels of blocking access to the drive while running, some doing a better juob than others. So if your utility will complete with background processes running then by all means don't worry about turning everything off...but if it takes a very long time to complete you should try to turn every thing off.

Not sure about the other part of your question...the worst I have ever seen by turning of something has been needing to reboot, but that has been in 9x...

About the Lava player... Frequently programs run open in your operating system even when they are not active on the screen. I'm willing to bet that something from the Lava player is loading at startup. This would mean that even if you never open the player, it will be present in the processes list.

One way to check this is to check the start-up folder in the programs menu. Another thing you can do is look closely through any preferences on Lava and see if there is a check box for "load on start-up" or something like that. If you uncheck the box, it should go away.

Also, the processes tab will show you % of CPU dedicated to that process, so if it is routinely 0, I wouldn't worry about it unless you plan on doing some heavy processing of something.
