The best CPU from intel (that uses socket 775) is
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115051)
They get the best Price for it also
$1,469.99
When they remove the last 9
I'll get one or maybe two of them
$146.99 :)

hmm not realy
if you took out the
1 gb Ultra (PC4200) ram
and replaced the
sapphire x1550 vga card
with a 8800Gt it you noticed a 400% performance increase ;)

It was when it was knew, (i have had it for a year now) its $379.99 at the moment
there are newer cards such as the 9800GX2 but they are very pricey
a card such as the
8800Gt (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150252) (midrange performance)
or
9600Gt (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130334) (lower midrange performance)
may be in your price league?
