Hey guys. i was wondering if you could help me out here with my USB snag. I turned on my computer today and all of a sudden all my usb devices stopped working. i go to the device manager to see what was the issue. The first thing I noticed was that my 'Human Interface Devices' was not there. I looked down at the usb controllers and they were fine (Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal host Controller and Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Universal host Controller), but then I see that the USB Root Hubs have exclamation marks on them. I figured that if I unplug my devices and then uninstall the all the usb drivers, it will fix itself after I restart (I read it on many other forums and it seemed to do the trick for everyone else....just not for me).

The computer did install the usb controllers, but the usb root hubs remained with exclamation marks(To be more precise, the message I get is: 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'). I was trying to get some work done, but all of my stuff is on my external HDD...sigh...this really blows...so I sit here typing this @ 5am EST in hopes of finding answers from those who have helped me before. I can't do anymore now so I guess I'll hit the sack. Thanks for reading.:(

Thanks for the links, but its all the same stuff I tried. On top of that, they talk about specific devices. For me its all my usb devices. It something about the root hubs...unless its the Intel usb controllers (it may be...if anyone has links to some standard ubs controllers, I'd appreciate it)...i dunno...I'm still trying stuff, but no luck. I appreciate you suggestions though. Thanks again.

Did you uninstall ALL the USB controllers, including the good ones?

Do that and reboot. Windows will re-install automatically.

Unplug all USB devices. Boot into Safe Mode. Go into Device Manager -> View -> Show Hidden Devices and remove the USB devices and controllers...reboot and let Windows reinstall them..if there is a problem, reinstall the motherboard/chipset drivers for your system.

Yeah, one of the first things I did was that.

ok. I'll do that(though I already did update the chipset drivers) *crosses fingers*

Well...I tried the last things mjc suggested, but nada. So I tried a last thing: System Restore. It succeeded. My Usb Drivers all seem fine. My external HDD is working perfectly. Whew...this is a finally over. Again, thanks to everyone for all their help. Thanks guys.

Making image backups of your Windows partition is even better than System Restore; it can fix Windows even when Windows won't load.
