I am sure that I already posted about this. Friend had sirc32 on her system. Ate her system files among other things. Fdisked and formatted, reinstalled windows. Now wierd things are happening. First, sound disappeared. Soundcard is there, drives are there, just no sound. She tried to turn it on the other day, and it asked for window98 setup disk, as system.ini file was gone. I found it by running scandisk. It was in a lost file. The computer now boots into windows, but the mouse is gone, the cd-rom is gone and the A: drive is going CRAZY....reading a disk that isn't there. THe keyboard isn't working....aghhhh! I am going crazy. SOmeone help. I know Mjc suggested doing a low level format and start from scratch. But I just want to make sure I didn't do something horribly wrong when I installed windows 98? Oh yeah, when I boot into safe mode the mouse and keyboard work. BUt the A:drive still goes crazy and there is no sign of the cd-rom.

When you formated, did you include the '/c' (tests bad sectors) switch? I've had a case where I reformated a system without the switch , and continued to have problems within the OS.

I would format C:\ again and start over with fresh install. I have had to do this afew times. Give it a try and see if it works.

When you install 98 do a system file checker to be sure you got a clean install. Start>programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>Tools>System File Checker.
