Sorry this may be a repost unfortunately, but after searching through the posts I saw one about whether to keep your computer on or not. Someone mentioned a temperature monitoring program? I was wondering how I would obtain it or something like it. I think I may need a new or better fan and I run an athlon processor so it runs a little hotter.. (plus I'm in a hot climate!). Any help would be appreciated http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Thanks!

You can find a number of these programs available for download.
I prefer to use MBM5 Mother board Monitor. Along with a small program called Shutdown
Mbm monitors Fans Temp’s Voltage and has a feature to run a program or sound a warning when these temps are reached or a fan fails.
In my unattended system and is set to run shutdown if the temps reach a predefined level.
It hen shuts down the system completely
MBM5 is available at.
http://mbm.livewiredev.com/
For those versions of Windows that don’t included a shutdown that allows Unattended activation
Shutdown Written By Kjetil L Nygard is available at a number of shareware and public domain sites. It allows predefined command settings.

I use VCool it is a program that runs in the system tray and will display the CPU and north bridge temp it can be set to force the CPU in to an idle loop. It can also be set to throttle back the CPU at certain temps. I have mine set to beep at 50C throttle back to 50% at 60C and 10% at 65C. If the CPU reaches 70C it will shut down my PC. The beep temp can't be adjusted but the other temps can. The beeps are useful for playing games that use the full screen and hide the system tray I wish they were a little louder they are very faint and hard to distinguish from the game sounds. I am using ver 1.6 I seen that 1.8 is out maybe I will upgrade they might have fixed the volume of the beeps. You can download it here it's freeware. (http://www.naggelgames.de/vcool/VCool.html)

Wow thanks:) I am stunned by such detailed and active responses:) It makes me more confident to starting to build my own custom system! I was curious also if water cooled systems are just sci-fi or a possibility or already done?
THANKS:) I look forward to many more new posts:)

Yes there are already watercooled systems out there ( look at Tom's hardware guide ) and i remember seeing a pic somewhere, where some enterprising individual had used a nitrous cooled system.
As chip technology matures, you'll being seeing heat as less and less of a problem, already the XP Athlon's run cooler than previous T-Birds.

Water cooling is very much available
However it is mostly in the realm of the Over Clockers
There are even Water cooled kits available.
However It’s My opinion that a first time builder should stay away from Both Over clocking and Water cooling .
These are two of the easiest ways to destroy a New system.
IisBob
I also agree with your“My ultimate gaming system http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif “
All exempt for the OS=Win 3.1
Shouldn’t that be DOS 6.22 http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Woaw my brain is already obsolete! I didn't see the nitrous cooled system. I've only recently come to the site and there is a lot of information to ingest. But I'm so glad that it is there to ingest! It's really complete and informative. And I thought water-cooled was sci-fi! I can't believe it. Next time I ask you'll be telling me that true artificial intelligence is around and robots are taking over the white house or something.
LOL on the ultimate gaming system http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Check this site out for Over clockers and reviews http://www.overclockers.com/home.asp
Here is a link to a water cooling system . http://www.agaweb.com/coolcpu/
Again I advice against Over Clocking
But it does make for some interesting reading and can help you under stand How CPU’s work

I really really really appreciate it Rick http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Thanks for the wonderful advice and the site. A light went on over my head when Michael(author of site) likened it with an engine. It makes more sense than I realized with the analogy! I really want to try the water cooled system! But I think I'll really just stay away from over clocking till I have some real money to spend (so if i fry something i wont get stuck on having nothing or wasting something..) and more experience.
I see in your future many more thank yous...
thank you! lol
Yah I'm cheesy!

IBM 5160 (XT)
DTK 256/640K motherboard
4.77MHz cpu, math coprocessor
640K RAM
2 X 20MB MFM drives
2 X 360K floppies
Hercules video EGA (4 color whoopie!!)
2 button mouse
joystick
DOS 6.22 (have win1 but can't get it to work)
IBM 12" monitor
Need to get a sound card in it, haven't done it yet, finally found one I think will work, but haven't tried it. Have a couple of modems, 2400, 9600, 14.4 external, but why bother?
How did you manage to get win3.11 to run on a 5MHz (4.77??) CPU???? And 16K memory? Minimum sys requirements are 386CPU & 4MB RAM...and it takes over 10MB to install...plus it needs to have himem.sys running, which won't work on less than a 386CPU. (Himem manages extended and/or expanded memory, both of which will not work on 4.77MHz, 8 bit XT machines, which are limited to 640K period. On less than 386 himem.sys will not load.)
Or are you pulling our collective leg?? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
