View Full Version : underclocking (no, really)

I got a good deal on a motherboard. It's an OEM board, and the documentation I got is not for the revision of the board (S7-MVP3-I board, S7-MVP3-G manual). I put a K6-2/550 processor in and set the jumpers. When I fire it up, it says 522 mhz processor found. I guess the system clock is set to 95 (95 * 5.5 = 522.5) even though I've got the jumpers set to 100 by the manual.
What harmful side effects might this cause? Or am I safe, just a little slow?

Howdy,
You should be fine and dandy, just slower than what you could be.
If it were me, I would really try to find the right manual, because apparently, you don't really have the FSB set at 100. However, I wouldn't go messing around either, 'cause then you might make matters worse. Wait until you get the right manual.
Cheers,

Have you run a program to verify the cpu speed? I had a K6-2 board where the BIOS would only report 522mhz or 400Mhz no matter what the jumpers were set to (if the jumpers were set from 400-500 it reported 400 and if they were set higher than 500, it said 522)
If you have the jumpers set to 5.5 X 100, the system may actually be running at 550, regardless of what the BIOS says...try running wincpuid or sisoft sandra to find out what the chip is really running...or just go to Start, Run and type "dxdiag" it should identify the chip speed...

Good call, hiredgoonz. Sandra reports 100 mhz fsb, 5.5 multiplier. Now, if I can get my ram to run synchronous with my fsb and not my agp slot, I think I'll be set...
BTW - thanks to both of you and everyone else on these forums. I've learned a lot these past few weeks, and I've tackled projects that I wouldn't have touched before. And I've finally got my system up and running! (I guess I'll need to change my sig soon...) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
