If you don't have one then see if you can borrow one from anyone with the same version of windows.

ok, but what if i cannot log into my computer... it never shows the desktop only a screen that says something about recovery.

If you want to restore to a factory condition then you must usee the HP recovery process for your model and that may be what the message is referring to. What is the exact message and what is the HP model?

Otherwise you should be able to attempt a repair or clean reinstall using a Windows Installation CD. Do you have any CDs (HP restore CDs or floppies) relating to your machine?

no its not the same computer and i dont have any cds for it.

A FREE iso file inside a zip file, that makes an XP Recovery Console Bootable CD, can be downloaded from here (http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/tools/bootdiscs/xp_rec_con.zip).

This could be used with the MS Article that Paul linked in post #2.
