Too many of the items which are dropped off at the recycle center have no cds, no manuals, no power adapters etc. It is hard to determine if the laptops can be returned to workable status. Today I spent a lot of time searching for a manual for a Micron GX Trek with no information found. The Micron website is of no help. Is there a third party source that sells manuals for the various laptops or pc's? I don't want to buy a new power adapter only to find out that the laptop can not be refurbished. Right now it is totally dead and I have no way of knowing if this is because of a dead battery or something else.

The best place I found...ebay.

User manuals, usually the best place is the manufacturer's website, but that isn't always the case. If Google doesn't bring up much by using the machines' model number, there may be some other info on a tag on the bottom that can bring more hits.

If it's just regarding power adapter/supply then there are generic kits available (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=MWS2465W-1&cat=PWR). Nearly every electrical device has a sticker on it telling you what the electrical input should be. There will be a voltage and an ampage (or wattage) specified. The input voltage shouldn't be exceeded and is best if it is accurate. It is OK if the input ampage/wattage maxima exceed the minima, which should be stated on the laptop's specification label - it just means the supply is capable of providing that much power - what is actually drawn off is a computation from the Voltage and the Resistance. It's analagous to having a 700 Watt PSU on a desktop - it doesn't mean that 700 Watts will be used at all but it shows there is that much capacity. But keep the Voltage values correct.

Nearly everything generic will be considerably cheaper than getting the exact proprietary model specified via the manual.

Try typing the Micron's serial number in the box on this page (http://support.mpccorp.com/serial/index.html)

Hope it helps! :)
