I just ran 3DMark Vantage 1.01 on my system. Just the trial version (which unfortunately is a one-time use key that requires a valid email addy) so nothing fancy. Four tests are run out of a possible 10, and no settings can be changed. Whatever - it's worth it for those of us running bonafide DX10 gaming monsters! Gotta justify the expenditures somehow, right? :p
IT WAS FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! :D
The second test had by far the best visuals I've ever seen from my monitor! The other tests were standard fare numbers ones - not totally incredible to watch but entertaining enough. I'm sad that the CPU tests are once again kind of boring, but it's not like 0.468 fps boring like 3DMark 05/06 was! All around, a good improvement. And to top it off, the greyed-out settings look like a lot of fun to mess with! ;) I live to play with settings...
The second test is probably going to be the one everyone talks about. It's the one with the space ships. I can't really bring justice to the sequence by describing it, so I'm just gonna call it "the one with the space ships". Oh man! You guys/gals (with Vista & DX10) gotta see it! You wanna talk about DX10's ability to infinitely scale a scene? You gotta see the frickin' planet in there!! And the asteroid belt! And the space ships! And the parallax occlusion mapping! *snif* It was beautiful!
So my score sucked. :p "P3830". Apparently they've adopted a new numbering scheme, most likely to divide the "have's" from the "have not's". Yeah, that score isn't that great. I think I might have peaked at 21 fps on that first test :p so it's pretty brutal. Then again, the whole thing ran at my desktop's res (1280 x 1024) which is a res that I'm not stupid enough to use for DX10 content! Low AA/AF, too. This sucker is going to draw a major line between all the different levels of DX10 parts and modern tech! (And future ones...) My poor little FX-60 (haha!) just can't keep up with the big boys of today; sadly, probably not even a Phenom of the same clock speed! That's saying something! And of course my DDR is severely lagging behind. My 8800 GTS 640MB is no slouch but I think it's actually being held back by my CPU/platform (onboard memory controller, you know). Geez... that's incredible to think about. I finally found a compelling benchmark for arguing an upgrade...
If I want to unlock all the goodies and be able to run it any time I want, I gotta cough up the $20 USD for the "Advanced" version. I think I'll buy it. Everytime a new 3DMark comes out, I always say to myself, "That's a good price and investment - I should buy it." This time, I actually will. It's a very enlightening benchmark, to say the least. Pure murder on your system, but PC gaming has always strived to be better for as long as I've been playing. That's why I keep playing...
DX10 vs DX9c? Now that I've actually seen DX10 in action, I give it the win. Graphics Test 2 // New Calico ("the one with the space ships"!!! :D) just wouldn't be possible at those frame rates under DX9c. Not from what I've seen. A 5-mile zoom-out with hundreds of asteroids, tons of particle effects, volumetric fog, depth-of-field, a huge space ship, and a frickin' planet at 16+ fps all on 17" of screen real estate!? I don't think so!! The Futuremark crew did a great job at realizing the DX10 dream. And they've done a great job at giving me a sneak-peek into what I need to upgrade. Hehe.
DX10 is coming. Are you ready? Because I'm not!
