I'm running an HPdv6000t that I bought maybe 10 months ago. This laptop has been my main machine for that time, so I use it a lot. That being said, at this point the battery only lasts for about 10 minutes when it's not plugged in, and sometimes it's even less than that. Is it normal for a battery to get worn down that fast over such a short period of time?

I've just been considering purchasing another battery but I also want to make sure that it's the battery that's causing such a short charge. Is there a chance that my laptop is just eating an inordinate amount of energy for some reason?

It is most likely the battery pack, if your laptop was drawing enough power to drain a perfectly good fully charged battery in 10 minutes, the result would involve a lot of heat and possible smoke.

If it is only ten months old, shouldn't it still be under warranty?

If it is, give HP a call and tell them you've got a bad battery and that it has been steadily deteriorating since you've go the thing...it should have been about 3 hours, when new.

I'll do that, HP has been pretty helpful with stuff like this in the past. Thanks.

Talked to a service representative online and they're sending me a new battery. Joy!

Cool, that is what tech support is supposed to be like.

If you still have the old battery and you are handy with basic voltages and tinkering, you may be able to recondition it. Even though they say LIon batteries don't hold 'memory' I still found this to help.

I fully drained my laptop battery that would not give any more than what you are experiencing and after recharging it, I got around 2-1/2 hours use out of it.

Tools:
18v Flashlight bulb (DeWalt in my case)
18ga wires with alligator clips
paper clips to insert into the + and - socket of the battery

Get lamp bulb running off the battery and let it drain down COMPLETELY. Recharge the battery in your laptop. Drain it once more. Recharge it again and see how long it lasts in the notebook.

You may be surprised. ;)

I would have loved to have tinkered with that battery and revive it, but HP required I that I send in the defective battery upon recieving the new one.
